February and March Seed Starting

Since we were expecting a baby at the end of February and my seed starting calendar told me that I needed to start seeds right around my due date, I figured I would be late starting February’s seeds. I was correct! Then with having a newborn and trying to adjust to life, I was also late starting the March seeds, however, all of the seeds have been started that need to be started any time soon!

We started oregano, thyme, basil, tomatoes, bell peppers, and hot peppers. I also put in an order from Rainbow Seeds to order more hot peppers and to order some dry beans to make another attempt this year at saving dry beans to use this winter. Rainbow Seeds is a company that sells heirloom seeds and is a Canadian company. Their seeds are non-GMO as well!

I am including the kids in the garden this year so they can learn how to grow their own food, learn how to start seeds, learn the life cycle of a plant, learn what a plant needs to thrive, how to harvest, how to keep plants alive, how to preserve the fruits/vegetables, and how to save seeds to start again next year. I think this is a pretty important skill and want to make sure the kids all know how to do this. So, I am taking a more hands off approach this year and am acting like more of a guide for them and helping hands. That is the plan anyway! Enjoy the video of the seeds we started for February/March. The next and last seeds we will start inside is when it is time to start squash plants so the squirrels do not eat all of my seeds this year!
